VEGETABLE TANNING

VEGETABLE TANNING

Vegetable tanning is the oldest method. It requires the use of vegetable tannins which can be very varied: tree bark, leaves or roots.

The choice of tannin used depends on the animal species from which the skin comes and the properties sought for the leather.

Vegetable tanning can be done by soaking the skins in tanks containing the tannins or in tannery drums.

It occurs slowly over periods ranging from a few days to several months. It produces leathers that are often firm or even hard, used in the manufacture of soles, saddles, shoulder straps and bag handles, belts, furniture, etc.
